What are attitudes?
A learned disposition to react consistently in response to an object, person or issue, in either a favourable (positive) or unfavourable (negative) way”
An organisation of feelings, beliefs and behaviour tendencies

A positive or negative evaluation feeling directed towards someone/something

The behaviour directed towards someone/something

what are social norms?
Social Norms – Rules and behaviours considered acceptable within social groups, with consequences for those who do not adhere. The situational nature of rules and reactions which produce social order.
what is deviance?
Deviance – Diverging from social norms. Deviance is not the quality of the act a person commits, it is a result of the social norms. “Normal” and “Stigmatised” are perspectives.
what is a stereotype?
“An oversimplified, generalised impression of a group and it’s members” (Baynard et al, Eds, 2015, p.245)
what is prejudice?
When a stereotype is negative. “An unreasonable or unfair dislike of something, or more likely, of someone” (Baynard et al, Eds, 2015, p.245)
what is stigma?
a mark or sign of disgrace usually eliciting negative attitudes to its bearer” (Thornicroft et al, 2007)
what is a self fulfilling prophecy?
A statement or prediction which directly or indirectly causes itself to come true through influencing behaviour. Attitudes towards self or others will influence outcomes.
what is self-stigma?
When people start to believe the prejudiced attitudes about themselves. Can impact on self-belief, self-esteem and confidence.
