Social Cognition
What is social cognition?
The study of social knowledge and cognitive processes. (leans heavily on theory and methodology of cognitive psychology)
What is an example of cognitive psychology?
Stroop effect (stroop, 1935)

The understanding of how we cognitively process and respond to social information (is an approach that permits unexpected insights into social behaviour)
what is categorisation?
grouping of two or more distinguishable objects that are treated in a similar way (classical view, prototype view, exemplar view)
What is a schema
A mental structure to organise knowledge about the social world. knowledge associated with a category is a schema
Statistical beleifs contain what?
specific numbers
Generic beleifs do not contain
specific numbers e.g books are paperbacks.
what are steriotypes
Typically generic beleifs, removed from statistics
What do we use concepts for?
making sense of the world (categories), to guide basic perception, guide interpretation of social information, and allow us to go beyond the information given. using concepts are essential to getting by in the world.
Trying not to think of something requires two processes which are?
- Intentional operating process (IOP) search for distractors (effortful).
- Ironic monitoring process (IMP) monitors whether IOP is successful (automatic, effortless). does this by searching for target word popping up.
What are controlled processes more prone to?
disruption (ironic effects of mental control)
