Asymmetrical Relationships

A

Imperialism depends on asymmetrical relationships which is the unequal power between Westerners and non-Westerners

Ex. Great Britain controlled India’s trade and phased out their cloth making while India received nothing in return

Tech differences between the west and non west, this is why imperialism was so successful (unequal access to tech)

A

Introduced in 1914 to give the government more control over people’s lives

One control of the act was a ban on buying rounds of drinks. People got drunk and were more inclined to say things that they did not like about the government

Retreat from idea of liberalism of people

Article 231

A

The Allied and Associated Governments affirm and Germany and allies accepts the responsibility for causing all the loss and damage to which the Allied and Associated Governments and their nationals have been subjected as a consequences of the war imposed upon them by the aggression of Germany and her allies.” Germany accepts responsibility for the war

If they did not pay, they would be subject to being invaded by France and Britain
- they do end up invading because of a missed payment

France wanted a harsher punishment but american president agreed upon these terms

This took away territory, agricultural resources, reduced army and navy size
- this is what started the stab in the back legend (Treaty of Versailles)

Freikorps

A

right wing group of former german soldiers who did not agree with the Treaty of Versailles
-filled with foreign soldiers
-evidence of the weak commitment to the values of liberal democracy of the Weimar republic
-so worried about communism that they were willing to add a non liberal solution, undermining a healthy liberal society

considered paramilitary since they modeled after German’s OG military but were not legit armed forces
-used violence to maintain law and order
- slowly transitioned into the Nazi Party

Freidrich Ebert becomes the new chancellor of Germany
-believed that the former chancellor stabbed Germany in the back for signing the Treaty of Versailles since it was a cowardly move
- Germany was not the only country to blame for war

General Paul Von Hindenburg is elected president in 1925
- loyal to Germany’s militarism

Showcased Britains colonies in 1886
-5.5 million attendees

Largest part was dedicated to India
- humans made to stand on display as an exhibit
- Dancers, weavers, and people cooking
- Indians were considered to be “exotic”

A demonstration of Britain’s imperial power and dehumanized these people just like a zoo exhibit
- social darwinist narrative see the British as having economic unity with their colonies

A

spread of american culture symbolized by the reach of the coca cola company

protest consumer society which was an ideology in america after WWII
- more household appliances bought
- consuming more culture and stuff

to french observers it seemed like colonization all over again
- money going back into american corporations
- fear of american businesses and france was defeated by the Nazis so they wanted to recover financially
