Social-reicher and haslam Flashcards
What is the background in which the study arises
Tyranny - an unequal social system involving arbitrary or oppressive use of power by one group or its agents over another
Inspired by the desire to try and understand tyranny
Zimbardo 1973 students assigned to roles of either prisoner or guard in mock prison in Stanford uni
The Stanford Prison Experiment (SPE) had to be stopped early because of the prisoners distress and guards brutality.
What year was the study and explain roughly what it is about
2006
Prison study to see if they make good people into bad people
How did Zimbardo explain the brutality of the behaviour of the guards
The person that takes on a role leads them to adopt a brutal behaviour which is a case of ‘the uniform made me do it’
In the SPE the tyranny was typical response when given the opportunity of having power over others.
Why did reicher and haslam feel that Zimbardos explanation of the brutality was inadequate
Not all the guards behaved in the same way
Not all of them were brutal
Not all of they liked the roles they had been assigned
Not all were arbitrarily unfair in their deAlings with the prisoners
How would the social identity approach explain people’s behaviour
Groups can have a positive or negative impact on people
Part of your identity increases your self esteem
You will be encouraged to act in a way that’s important to your group
What are the four aims of R&H
1) to look at the interactions of people with unequal power and privilege
2) to analyse the conditions that lead individuals to
Identify with the group
To accept or challenge inter group inequalities
3) to examine the role of social, organisational and ethical factors in group behaviours
4) to develop practical and ethical guidelines for examining social phycological issues in large scale studies
What sample method
Self selecting
How were the participants allocated to their group
