Physiological-sperry Flashcards
Wat is a tachistoscope
Equipment that project a word/picture to the left or right for a second
Wat year was the study
1968
Wat is corpus callosum
Nerve tissue connecting the 2 hemispheres of the brain
Wat is commisurotomy
Split brain surgery
Wat is lateralisation of function
E.g left hemisphere controls language
Wat is the aim
To investigate the effects of deconnection and to show that each hemisphere of the brain has different functions
Wat research method is it ND why
Quasi experiment
Split brain surgery has already been done
Naturally occurring independent variable
Describe sample
11 people
All had surgery - severed their corpus callosum
Compared to ‘normal people’ who hadn’t had surgery
Weakness of sample
Small sample and hard to find people who have undergone the same surgery
Not many operations - difficult to get a bigger sample
Strength of sample
Can’t make any generalisations because brains are altered
Don’t know if epilepsy or drug therapy have altered the brain
2 controls
Images in the tachistoscope has been used for 10th of a second
Asked them to remain silent - if speak it will alter experiment
Wat ethical guidelines did they follow
All of them
Identify 2 problems
Small sample
Trying to compare brains that are all different - some people may be more epileptic than others
