What was nativism and why did it grow
Belief those who’s parents were born in the US wanted to protect the the US from alien ways. Grew as tensions between new and old immigrants for jobs etc.
Why was there an anti-Chinese feeling at the time and what this called
‘Yellow Peril’ which was encouraged by the media, largely due to the Chinese being a good source of cheap labour, good work ethic but resented white workers
What and when did the US limit Chinese immigration
1882 exclusion act, prevented Chinese workers gaining citizenship
Where did other social divisions occur
Farmers
Women
Prohibition
How were the farmers divided
Set up movements such as the granger movement and knights of labour. This was done to promote the economic needs of farmers and promote agricultural advancement
How was the issue of female suffrage divided
Support was split. Radicals vs conservatives. Elizabeth Candy Stanton and suffragists were conservative whereas 1890 American Women’s suffrage association established
How was prohibition divided
Not everyone supported it, strong support by Women’s Christian Temperance movements and Anti Saloon league. Opposed by breweries etc.
How did the North/East change
Hugely affected by industrialisation and urbanisation. Cities boomed such as NY and Chicago. Railroads were also important in achieving this.

What divisions were apparent in the the New South
African Americans v Whites
AAs were uncertain wether to push for more change
South felt alienated from the rest of the US, still depended on ‘king cotton’
What caused conflict in the West
Rapid settlement due to government and ordinary people meant whites broke treaties made with Native American tribes
How were Whites and Native Americans divided
Whites destroyed Indian way of life- fenced off land forces native Americans into reservations. Poor white famers felt exploited.Heavily reliant on railroad for supplies and exporting produce. Resulted in the Grainger Movement in 1867
