Most became sharecroppers(Rural cotton), black codes become Jim Crow laws meaning that AAs lost the right to vote in many states and were segregated in all aspects of society

Immigrated to the north, chose new surnames, married, set up churches, founded new schools. 3 AA unis (Fisk, Hampton, and Howard)
Who was Booker T Washington
Head of Tuskegee institute in Alabama 1881-1915- trained AA teachers, but he was a moderate meaning he accommodated white supremacy
