social psychology methods Flashcards
1
Q
how are thoughts/feelings/behaviours measured?
A
- self-report: questionnaires
- laboratory
- explicit methods: assess conscious thoughts
- implicit: assess outside conscious control
2
Q
implicit measures
A
- influence how easy it is to retrieve a schema
- highly accessible schemas are more likely to influence cog processes and behaviour
- implicit association test
- priming
- lexical decision task
3
Q
implicit association test
A
- p.s. categorise 2 types of stimuli using 2 buttons
- overweight vs healthy weight silhouettes and good vs bad words
- congruent categorisation: quick response
- incongruent: match good words with obesity - slower responses indicate stronger attitudes
4
Q
priming
A
- presentation of stimulus unconsciously increases accessibility of related cognitions/schemas and influences behaviour/cognitions
- e.g. present attractive or unnatractive face for 13ms, shown word ‘laughter’ and asked if it is positive or negative - faster response when shown attractive face
5
Q
lexical decision task
A
assesses accessibility of cognitions
- shown letters and judge whether they form a word or not - words, non-words, target words
- critical trials: target words are presented that reflect the cognitions of interest
- interested in reaction time it takes to access the target words - faster when primed
6
Q
randomised control trial
A
reduces allocation bias - each p.s. has equal chance of being in intervention vs control
7
Q
narrative reviews
A
- provide overview of current knowledge on broad general topic
- no new analysis
8
Q
systematic reviews
A
- reviews evidence for well defined and precise research question
- intro, method, results, discussion
- method details have strict inclusion/exclusion criteria
9
Q
meta-analysis
A
- same as systematic but quantifies overall effect found across all studies
- assess magnitude of effects to show overall effect
- often presented with systematic review
10
Q
what does WEIRD stand for?
A
-western
-educated
-industrialised
-rich
-democracies
this is what research is limited to
