Social Psychology - Conformity - Explanations Flashcards
What is Normative Social Influence?
Person conforms because of their need to be accepted by and belong to the group. They want to fit in. May personally disagree but conform on the surface.
When are people most likely to conform to NSI?
In a group which is important to us and in which we spend a lot of time.
How do Asch’s results from Interviews support the explanation of NSI?
Some people said the reason they conformed was to fit in.
What is Informational Social Influence?
Person is unsure how to behave, or unclear as to what to feel. They want to be right.
When are people most likely to conform to ISI?
In new or ambiguous situations.
What happened in Latane and Darley (1968)?
- Asked P to sit in waiting room, waiting for interview. Wall vent began pouring smoke into room.
- P observed though one-way mirror to see how long it took them to report it.
- P’s tested singly or in groups, where others were confederates who had to ignore smoke.
What were the results of this Latane and Darley (1968)?
- 75% single, reported smoke within two minutes.
* In groups, less than 13% didn’t report smoke at all.
Evaluate Latane and Darely (1968).
- Lacks ecological validity as the study wouldn’t have happened in real life. Demand characteristics are a factor as people may guess what’s expected of them.
- Protect P’s from harm – lungs could be damaged from smoke and/or emotional trauma from past fire related events.
What are Social Roles?
The part people play as members of a social group. With each social role you adopt, your behaviour changes to fit expectation both you and others have of that role.
Where does support for social roles come from?
Zimbardo (1973) Prison Study.
Why might we criticise Zimbardo’s study as an explanation from Conformity?
Too involved; gave them batons and sunglasses, made prisoners wear blindfolds, not allowed to look out windows, not wearing underwear. He conformed to role of superintendent. Study is floored.
