Q

This chapter described three ways to challenge public stigma. What are they? Briefly describe the effectiveness of each (according to this chapter)

A

1) Education: challenging myths about MI; Evidence tends to show that those with a better understanding of MI are less likely to endorse stigma & discriminate. Produces short-term improvements in attitude. Impact of education programs might be limited & immediate effects of educational programs found that these kinds of programs produce small reductions in the stigma of MI. Exportable!

2) Protest: – limited effect on public prejudice – rebound? “Economic protests” might have a significant impact on media in getting stigmatizing images of MI withdrawn

3) Contact: those who interact with individuals with MI are less likely to endorse stigmatizing beliefs & more likely to endorse positive statements/attitudes about the population
