Social Psychology Flashcards
Who was Hofling?
A guy who conducted the Nurses Experiment in 1966
What was Hofling’s thesis?
He wanted to see whether nurses would obey an order breaching hospital guidelines
Describe Hofling’s experiment.
A doctor phoned and asked to give medicine (astroxin) to a patient however and he would sign off the paperwork and authorisation form later as he was in a rush.
In what way did the Nurses breach hospital regulations?
Doctors were meant to be there in person when giving a patient medication, the dosage asked was twice the maximum dosage, and the medicine was unauthorised as it hadn’t been signed off on the form by a doctor.
What were Hofling’s findings?
21/22 nurses obeyed the phone doctor
What does Hofling’s experiment show?
Hierarchies put pressure on people to conform and obey
