Social Psychological theories Flashcards
Two psychological social theories
Individual interactionist and family dysfunction theory
Two theorists in family dysfunction theory
Minuchin (1974) and Asen et al (1989)
Family dysfunction theory…
concern is with the impact of the family dynamics on the behaviour of its members
FD- Minuchin (1974)…
Theorises that there are two main subsystems within the family, the children and the parents. Emphasis on the need for boundaries to be maintained between the two to ensure a healthy climate for all members
FD- Asen et al…
Focused on how family dynamics contribute to abuse. They referred to the notion of stand in abuse, the child is subjected to violence by its parents as a means of getting to the other parent
What does individual interactionist take in to account..
Take childs contribution to situations into account. Greater attention placed on current relationships not parental background.
Dibble + Strauss (1980)…
Pointed out that violence to children does take place where the parents condone such violence. This is because violence is often situated, not a product of attitudes.
What does Dibble + Strauss (1980) study involve?
Involved families of two parents and they found that violence on the part of one parent, influences the other even though they may be opposed to it personally.
