Name 2 theorists in attachment theory..
Bowley (1971) + Rutter 1978
Biology and child abuse, Hardy (1997)…
In one species of monkey if they wanted to mate with a female that already had young they would kill the young. Because they have no gene investment in the young.
Biology an child abuse, Reitte (1987)…
Animals abuse their young where there are disturbances in early mother-infant attachment. Have in a very general way applied this to issue of step parenting and sub partenting.
Attachment theory, Bowley (1971)…
Argued that a child attached to the moth gains the dual benefit of physical protection and psychological security.
Rutter (1978) criticism of Bowley (1971)…
Doesnt take into account that the child could become attached to other significant figures as well as the mother.
What do most attachment theorists now agree?
That children around 3 can cope with seperation because they can by use of language and reasoning understand and accept explanations of what is happening.
What is learning theory based on..
Simple view that behaviour is shaped by the interaction of an individual with the environment
What does learning theory beleive is the cause of child abuse?
Largely the result of having learnt dysfunctional child care practises of alternatively of not having learned functioning child care practices. Adults who have experienced punitive treatment may well rely on such methods to discipline their own children.
Dubanoski et al (1978) in Learning theory…
Described a set of behavioural explanations as to why children are physically abused; parents may lack affective child management techniques, the abuse may result from explosive acts triggered by the child.
