what is social policy?
refers to the legislation, guidelines and interventions designed to change, maintain or create living conditions that are necessary for human welfare
- it is designed to address social issues = reduce crime
give example of social policy??
gov has developed new policies to address knife crime = increase max sentence for those found with zombie style knives from 6 months to 2 years and another which is the knife crime prevention orders which is a community based sentence to steer young people away from knife crime.

what are crime control policies?
- examples of formal policies that place emphasis on reducing crime in society through increasing the powers of the police, prosecutors and courts
- most crime control policies have resulted in greater public spending on law enforcement and higher rates of incarceration in prisons
what are state punishment policies?
- another example of formal policies which set guidelines for the type of punishments that go to particular crimes.
- in UK we have variety of punishments = imprisonment, fines, community service and police cautions.
