Q
explain what the CCTV policy is??
A
- acts as a formal method of survelliance within society, recording and monitoring public behaviour
- overt use can have a deterrent effect on criminal behaviour
- includes images from cameras on streets and buissnesses. UK has one of the largest total CCTV cameras in the world
- british security association estimates 4-5.9 million cameras
- used to trace a person’s movements, according to reports a condoner is liekly caught on secueirty camera over 300 times a day
3
Q
how does this policy link to sociological theories??
A
- use of CCTV and other surveillance policies can link to the theory of right realism, specifiaclly the rational choice theory
- if all criminals are rational thinkers who weigh up to the costs and benefits of each crime, CCTV would cause the costs to outweigh the benefits as it would increase the chance of getting caught, deterring the criminals
- the policy redcues offedening as the rational criminals should be afriad of consequences of being identified
4
Q
what are the arguments for the policy working??
A
- college of policing effects of CCTV on crime 2013, identified that CCTV make a small but statistically significant reduction in crime
- where CCTV can offer an effective level of deterrent seems to be against those planned out crimes such as trespass and burglary, car theft, car crime and other antisocial behaviour
5
Q
what are the arguments against this policy working??
A
- studies suggests that CCTV is less effective when it comes to violent crime possibly due to violent crimes leikly to be impulsve and likely to take place whether in CCTV or not
- earlier studies also conclude that CCTV was less effective in preventing those quick crimes, where cameras can be dodged or crimes can be committed and escape before security personnel can arrive
- CCTV in public areas such as a town or city centres are being reduced significantly so that police patrols and street wardens can be funded instead
