Social Perception Flashcards
Prosopagnosia
- Condition where one loses ability to identify faces but keeps the ability to perceive objects
- shows that facial recognition is in a different part of the brain
Processing facial expressions
Occurs in the superior temporal sulcus (STS)
- responds to any type of biological movement in face
Patient WJ
- A stroke caused his prosopagnosia
-He could still recognize the faces on sheep - This showed us that there is a specific module in the brain that does human facial recognition
Superior temporal sulcus (Haxby Face Processing model)
changeable aspects of faces - perception of eye gaze, expression and lip movement
Inferior occipital gyri (Haxby Face Processing model)
early perception of facial features
lateral fusiform gyrus (also known as FFA) (Haxby Face Processing model)
invariant aspects of faces - perception of unique identity
Superior Temporal Sulcus (STS)
responds to
- eye movement
- mouth movement
- hand movement
- body movement
Extended system of the Haxby face processing model
1.) Intraparietal Sulcus = spatially directed attention
-2.) Auditory cortex = prelexical speech perception
3.) amygdala, insula, limbic system = emotion
(1-3 are a part of the STS)
4.) Anterior temporal = personal identity, name abd biographical information
(4 is a part of the lateral fusiform gyrus )
Processing Facial Attractiveness
People judged to have more attractive faces are treated differently
WEIRD (issues with study of attractiveness )
Western
Educated
Industrialized
Rich
Democratic
Issue bc not everyone is WEIRD so the study did not cover a good sample size but only about 12%
Fluctuating Asymmetry
- Individual variation between left and right traits that tend to be symmetric at the population level
-Challenged to health increase fluctuating asymmetry
‘ Mutations
‘ Pathogens
‘ Toxins
‘ Infections - symmetry may indicate phenotypic quality and how well an individual’s genome can resist disease and maintain normal development in the face of environmental perturbation
Sex differences in face anatomy
relative to female faces male faces have
- larger jaws
-larger brow ridges
-more prominent cheekbones
- thinner lips
- more protuberant chin
In WEIRD subjects, symmetric faces are made to me more or less attractive?

Difference between facial perception in humans and monkeys?
Humans process face identity in the FFA and Mokeys process it in the IT but both process facial expression in the STS
Sex differences in facial structure emerge wheN?
