Social learning theory - AO3 Flashcards
What is a PECS of SLT?
- P: Strength = includes cognitive factors
- E: Explains responses that are not imediate; information is stored
- C: However, still does not consider biological e.g hormones in agression - role of different hormones in aggression
- S: So… SLT still may not give a complete explanation of behaviour
What are two strengths of SLT?
- P: Strength = various applications
- E: Including social contexts means cultural differences in behaviour can be explained
- E: Explains aggression and acquistion of gender roles and identity
- L: So… SLT has value in being able to account for real-world behaviour
- P: Strength = recipricol determinism
- E: Bandura argued we are influence by our environment, but also influence it with the behaviours we choose to perform
- E: Suggests there is some free will in behaviour - gap between learning and response
- L: So… SLT is more reallistic explanation in linne with current juridicial system
What is a limitation of SLT?
- P: Limitation = artificial environment
- E: Bandura’s theories developed through controllled observations
- E: Subject to demand characteristics: Bobo doll designed to be hit
- L: So… Bandura’s research may tell us little about social learning theory
What were the aims of Bandura (1961) study?
To see if children learnt aggressive behaviour by observing adults acting in an aggressive manner
What was the procedure of Bandura’s (1961) study?
72 children watched a video of a model and were then taken to a room containing lots of toys including Bobo doll
What were the findings of Bandura’s (1961) study?
Children who had previously seen adults acting aggressively were more likely to also be aggressive with their Bobo doll. Children in the non-aggressive (and control conditions) showed very little aggression
What were the conclusions of Bandura’s (1961) study?
Aggressive behaviour can be learnt through imitation of others behaving aggressively
