Social Learning Theory Flashcards
Social Learning Theory is learning via ..
Observation
- People learn behaviour by observing another person
Attention
Behaviour has to be noticed
Retention
The behaviour has to be remembered
Reproduction
The person has to be capable of reproducing the behaviour
Motivation
There has to be a motivation to repeat the behaviour - this can be intrinsic or extrinsic (internal or external)
Role Models
Anyone you can copy behaviour from
Identification
Why boys copy boys and girls copy girls- it is the taking of qualities, characteristics and views of another person
Vicarious Reinforcement
A person learning something through someone else being rewarded for doing it
The Modelling Effect
People copy behaviour they would not have done if not for a model
The Eliciting Effect
The observer copies, but slightly differently
The Disinhibiting Effect
Someone will copy the behaviour if they see someone doing it without a negative consequence
The Inhibitory Effect
People stop doing something because they see a model being punished
Vicarious Punishment
Someone is punished for an action therefore the other person learns not to do that
Vicarious Extinction
People stop doing something because they see others have not been rewarded for it
Supporting Evidence
Bandura’s work (1961/1963) shows that children do copy aggression (including the same sex model) when aggression is modelled in real life or on the screen
