Social learning theory Flashcards
who came up with SLT and when?
bandura 1960’s
what does slt propose?
agrees with idea that people can learn through conditioning but also claims they learn alot from role models
what does SLT propose must take place for learning to happen?
modelling
pos and neg reinforcement
vicarious reinforcement
what does modelling involve?
involves observing and imitating another person. it also involves identification with the model. when you identify with the model you can copy and learn from their behaviour
how does reinforcement allow learning to take place?
positive and negative reinforcement makes the behaviour more likely to happen again in the future
what is vicarious reinforcement ?
seeing others being rewarded for a behaviour influences someone to imitate the behaviour
for effective learning mediational processes need to happen what are these 4 processes?
attention
retention
reproduction
motivation
what is attention?
to learn a behaviour from others you have to pay attention to it.
what is retention?
not only do you have to pay attention to it but you need to remember what you observed to be able to model it
what is reproduction?
you can then judge whether you have the ability to reproduce the behavior - if you think you can you are far more likely to do it
what is motivation?
if the behavior results in a good reward you are more likely to imitate it
SLT is a reductionist theory, what does this mean?
it explains things through very simple cause and effect mechanisms
