Bandura et al 1961 Flashcards
what did bandura et al show?
showed successfully how children imitate and can be influenced by adult role models
what was the method of Bandura’s study?
36 girls and 36 boys took part in study
the study had a matched participants design
3 conditions
1.children observed aggressive adult models playing with a bobo doll
2. children observed non aggressive models playing with other toys and ignoring the bobo doll
3. controlled condition in which children had no exposure to models
the childrens behaviour was then observed for 20 minutes in a room containing aggressive toys and non-aggressive toys
what were the results of Banduras study?
- children exposed to aggressive models imitated a lot of their aggressive behaviour
- children in the non-aggressive and control conditions showed barely any aggressive behaviour
- aggressive behaviour was slightly higher in the control condition than the non-aggressive condition
what was the conclusion of Bandura’s study?
Aggressive behaviour is learned through imitation of others behaving aggressively
what was the evaluation of bandura’s study?
- the study provides evidence for SLT
- there was strict control of variables which meant the results are reliable and the study can be replicated
- low ecological validity as rps weren’t in natural environment
