Social Learning Theory Flashcards
1
Q
What is SLT?
A
- proposed by Bandura
- SLT is the developmennt of behaviourism
- behaviourism suggests that learning occurs through classical and operant conditioning
- SLT suggests that learning can also occur through the observation of models/others behaviours.
2
Q
What is modelling?
A
- the demonstration of a behaviour that may be limited. An individual who performs this role is referred to as a model.
3
Q
What is imitation?
A
- the copying of a modelled behaviour
4
Q
Who researched into SLT?
A
Bandura + Walters {1963}
4
Q
What is vicarious reinforcement and punishment?
A
- If we see the model being reinforced for a behaviour, we are more likely to imitate.
- if we see a model being punished, we are less likely to imitate it.
- This is vicarious reinforcement.
5
Q
What did Bandura do to research SLT?
A
- To support SLT, Bandura conducted a series of experiments.
- The experiments known as ‘Bobo dolls’ were used as they involved the use of life-sized inflatable clown dolls.
6
Q
What was Bandura’s procedure?
A
- young children aged 3-5 were split into 3 groups.
- all the children watched a film of an adult behaving aggressively towards a Bobo doll.
- The adult model displayed distinctive Physical and verbal aggressive acts towards the Bobo doll.
- after watching, the children are left in a room to play with the doll.
- the children’s behaviour is then watched.
7
Q
What did Group 1 observe?
A
Aggressive adult being reinforced
8
Q
What did Group 2 observe?
A
Aggressive adult being punished
9
Q
What did Group 3 observe?
A
did not observe the aggressive adult model being reinforced or punished.
10
Q
What did Bandura find?
A
- Group 1 observed aggression and behaved aggressively.
- Group 2 observed aggression being punished and behaved least aggressively.
11
Q
What did Bandura Conclude?
A
- Children are more likely to imitate aggressive behaviour if they observe the model being reinforced for it.
- Children are less likely to imitate aggressive behaviour if they observe the model being punished.
- This supports SLT and the concept of vicarious reinforcement and punishment.
12
Q
What are the meditational processes purpose?
A
- they are cognitive processes
- they determine whether imitation occurs or not
13
Q
What are the 4 meditational processes?
A
Attension
Retention
Motor reproduction
Motivation
14
Q
What is Attension?
A
- The extent to which an observer makes a modelled behaviour.
- If it is imitated, the observer notices it.
15
Q
What is Retension?
A
- The extent to which an observer remembers a modelled behaviour.
- For a behaviour to be imitated, the observer must remember it.
16
Q
What is Motor reproduction?
A
- The ability of an observer to perform a modelled behaviour.
- For it to be imitated, the observer must be able to perform it.
17
Q
What is Motivation?
A
- The will of the observer to perform a modelled behaviour.
- This is given based upon whether the model was rewarded or punished for performing that behaviour.
