Biological Approach Flashcards
1
Q
What is an assumption of the biological approach?
A
-that they explain all aspects of psychological functioning in terms of phsysical factors within the body
- these include : genes,
biological structures, neuro chemistry
2
Q
What is the influence of genes on behaviour?
A
- behavioural genetics study whether psychological traits such as intelligence and personality are inherited in the same way as physical traits such as height and eye colour.
- twin studies are used to investigate
3
Q
What is learnt from Twin studies?
A
- MZ twins share 100% of their genes
- DZ twins share 50% of their genes
- MZ twins are concordance
- MZ twins have the same genotype but different phenotype
4
Q
What is a genotype?
A
- Genetic makeup of an individual
5
Q
What is a phenotype?
A
- Observable characteristics of a gene
6
Q
What is the nervous system?
A
- specialised network of cells
- function = to enable communication between all parts of the body
- it is divided int 2 sub systems
- made up of neurons
- neurons transmit electrical impulses to provide the nervous system with its primary means of connection
7
Q
What are the nervous systems 2 sub systems?
A
- Central Nervous system {CNS}
- Peripheral Nervous system {PNS}
8
Q
What is the CNS?
A
- made up of brain and spinal chord
9
Q
What is the PNS?
A
- Carries information to and from CNS
- Made up of somatic nervous system {SNS} which governs voluntary actions and the autonomic nervous system {ANS} which governs involuntary actions .e.g breathing
10
Q
What are parts of the brains functions?
A
- Cerebrum = largest area of the brain, it is split down the middle into two cerebral hemispheres which are connected by the corpus collosum
- Each cerebral hemisphere is divided into 4
11
Q
What are the 4 parts of the Cerebral Hemisphere, and their functions?
A
- Frontal lobe = Involved in speech, learning and though
- Temporal lobe = Involved in hearing and memory
- Parietal lobe = Involved in touch and taste
- Occipital lobe = Involved in vision
