social learning theory Flashcards
attention
a person will watch a criminal role model, generally older and the same sex as themselves and aspire to be like them. for example gang leader may be viewed as powerful may be robbing a store making a lot of noise so you notice them.
retention
a person will remember the gang leader from the store and the robbery.
reproduction
the person will then imitate the gang leader.
motivation
this is a persons desire to imitate the criminal behaviour. this may be due to vicarious reinforcement. if you see the criminal role model receive praise for their cb then you will imitate cb to receive some praise. external reinforcement- you are given praise and a rush for the criminal behaviour.
:) can explain the role of media in causing cb
the media can portray cb in an ideological way which may in turn cause the children watching to want to replicate the behaviour. T/F increasing the validity of SLT as an explanation for cb.
:( does not account for all types of crime
certain crimes such as fraud are not visible or depicted in the media however still happen T/F decreasing the validity of SLT as an explanation for cb.
:( reductionist
SLT only accounts for the impact of social influences in causing criminal behaviour and does not account for the role of nature/biology. T/F reducing the validity of slt as an explanation for cb
