Labelling theory Flashcards
Society
creates a criminal/deviant label to a certain behaviour based on stereotypes
Authorities
are maintaining their power structure in society
a deviant
behaviour is showed by an individual and the label is ascribed to them
the individual may
be treated according to that deviant label
this can lead
to the individual becoming stigmatised in society
the individual will
believe the label and have a low self image of themselves
others will
treat the individual based on that label. the individual feels marginalised in society
this can lead
to the individual to go on and fulfill the label and commit more criminal behaviour
Lieberman :)
found that juveniles who had been previously arrested were more likely to commit other crimes compared to juveniles who had not been previously arrested. t/f showing that criminal label can lead to cb, increasing the validity of the theory.
:) can be used in conjunction with other theories
according tot the self fulfilling prophecy, people need to first be labelled in order to be treated in accordance with this label, which then leads to the label becoming true. t/f the theory has inter rater reliability
:( reductionist
only considers the role of nurture, being given a criminal label. does not consider the role of nature t/f the theory is too simplistic and cannot fully explain why cb occurs, reducing the validity of the theory.
:( unscientific
it is difficult to experimentally research labelling theory. it is hard to isolate labelling and to just research the effect of this variable on cb t/f cannot establish cause and effect of label leading to cb as there are many other factors that can impact.
