Social learning theory Flashcards
Who proposed SLT
Bandura
What is SLT
Explaining behaviour that includes both direct and indirect reinforcement.
Combines learning theory and cognitive factors
In Banduras opinion how is behaviour learnt
Through observation and imitation when the learner observes the behaviour and the consequence of it.
When, in general, does imitation occur
when behaviour is rewarded
Vicarious reinforcement
Not directly experienced but occurs through observing someone else being reinforced for a behaviour
what does SLT focus on
how cognitive factors effect learning and how they intervene in the learning process
four mediational (interveinal) processes
Attention-noticing behaviours
Retention-remembering behaviours
Motor reproduction-Ability to preform behaviours
Motivation-Will to preform behaviour
What do cognitive factors mediate in
whether a new response (behaviour) is acquired
How is motivation to perform a behaviour determined
Dependent on if the behaviour is rewarded or punished.
What doesn’t need to occur together
learning and performance
Identification
observer associates themself with a role model and wants to be like the role model
who would be defined as a “roll model”
possess similar characteristics, attractive, high status and usually the same gender.
Pros of SLT
Recognizes the importance of cognitive factors in learning -SLT is a more comprehensive explanation of human learning
Cons of SLT 1
Doesn’t reference biological factors on social learning. Bandura believed our biological differences effected our learning potential but thought learning itself was due to the environment
Cons of SLT 2
Evidence gained through Lab studies-Participant’s may respond to command characteristics.
