Social Learning theory Flashcards
what are live models?
parents, peers, and teachers
what is SLT?
- proposed by Bandura
- learning through observations and imitations
- imitating the role model is called modelling
what are symbolic models?
media characters
what factors determine imitation?
- characteristics of models
- observers perceived ability to perform behaviour
- observed consequence of behaviour
what are mediational processes?
- bridge between learning theory and cognitive approach
- mediates the learning process to determine whether a new response is required
- ARRM
what is identification?
- associating with the qualities, characteristics, and views to become more like that person.
- people are more likely to copy a role model of similar age, gender, and ethic background.
ARRM
attention, retention, reproduction, and motivation
vicarious reinforcement
if the observed behaviour was rewarded, imitation is more likely.
who conducted the bobo doll experiment?
Bandura, Ross & Ross
Bobo doll aim:
to investigate whether aggression can be learned through social learning theory principles
Bobo doll method:
- 72 kids, equal genders, between 3 and 6 yrs old put into one of three groups for 10 mins ( aggressive, non-aggressive, and control group)
aggressive group
- child completed a task while adult hit and shouted at Bodo doll
- further subdivided based on gender of the child and the model, creating four conditions
non-aggressive group
- child completed a task while adult quietly played with a construction set
- further subdivided into gender of the child and the model, creating four conditions
control group
child didn’t see a model
Bobo doll results:
- children who saw the aggressive model were more aggressive than the other groups
- boys imitated same-sex models more than girls
- girls imitated more physical aggression seeing males, and verbal aggression seeing females
Bobo doll conclusion:
aggressive behaviour can be learned, in children, through observation and imitation of a model
strengths of SLT
Research support for identification
- fox and bailenson found humans more likely to copy computer made humans who were similar to them
- shows identification leads to more learning
Real world applications
- akers found we’re more likely to engage in criminal behaviour if exposed to models we identify with
limitations of SLT
Methodology used
- strictly controlled conditions demand characteristics may have occurred
- not a genuine learned behaviour
Causality regarding deviant behaviour
- youths that hold deviant values are likely to seek out ppl with similar values as they’re more fun
- shows reinforcement of deviant behaviour is a two- way process, not just SLT itself
