social learning theory Flashcards
what is the social learning theory?
a theory in which social behaviour is learned by observing and imitating the behaviour of others
what are the three types of role models?
1) symbolic role model
2) live role model
3) verbal role model
what makes someone a role model?
1) having a percieved similiarites
2) identification
3) having a percieved status
what are three variables that affect imitation?
1) characteristics of the observer
2) characteristics of role model
3) the consequences of the behaviour for the model —> rewarded or punished?
what are the 4 stages of the social learning process?
1) attention
2) retention
3) motor reproduction/imitation
4) motivation
what is vicarious reinforcement?
v.c occurs when the frequency of certain behaviours increases as a result of observing others rewarded for the same behaviours
what is vicarious punishment?
where people do a behavior less often after they’ve seen someone else behave that same way and experience negative consequences as a result
vicarious exrinction
occurs when it is noticed that the person who has been observed engaging in the behaviour is no longer rewarded, so that behaviour stops
attention
where learning starts off with a person paying attention to the model
retention
where the behaviour being modelled needs to be retained by the observer
motor reproduction
where the retained behaviour is then reproduced and performed
vicarious learning
learning that happens by observing the actions and outcomes of others’ behaviors
intrinsic motivation
internal need or satisfaction, such as excitement, that motivates a person to continue that behaviour
extrinsic motivation
external reward of satisfaction, such as a promotion or a complement, that causes a person to continue that behaviour
self efficacy
- the self belief and the tools or the resources to carry out that behaviour
