social learning theory Flashcards
social learning theory was proposed by
albert bandura
how did bandura propose behaviour is learnt
through observation and imitation of others
what does social learning theory consider
both environmental and cognitive factors interact to influence human learning and behaviour
four main concepts of SLT
imitation
identification
modelling
vicarious reinforcement
imitation
when an individual observes a behaviour from a role model and then imitates
identification
people are more likely to imitate the behaviour of people with whom they identify, called role models.
a person becomes a role model if they are seen to possess similar characteristics to the observer (eg same gender) and are attractive and have high status
modelling
when an individual imitates a role models behaviour
vicarious reinforcement
the reinforcement the observer sees the model receiving
they do not receive the reward themselves, they see someone else get it
a reinforcement, such as reward, makes a behaviour more likely to happen again, punishment makes it less likely to happen again
mediational processes definition
four cognitive processes central to learning behaviours
four mediational processes names
Attention
Retention
Reproduction
Motivation
attention
the behaviour has to be important as to grab our attention
retention
the modelled behaviour needs to be remembered, if you dont remember a behaviour you cant imitate it
reproduction
trying out the behaviour
motivation
there needs to be reason to repeat the behaviour - if behaviour will be positively rewarded, motivates us to imitate it
albert banduras experiment
the bobo doll experiment
participant information
bobo doll experiment
36 boys and 36 girls 3-6 years old
process
bobo doll experiment
each put into a room with an inflatable doll and observed an adult role model interact with the doll for 10 mins
what each type of role model did
bobo doll experiment
aggressive role models - hits doll and shouts at it
non aggressive role model - no hits or shouting
control - no role model
results of bobo doll experiment
children who observes aggressive role models acted more aggressively
boys acted more aggressively than girls
greater level of imitation if they were the same gender
therefore provides support for SLT
strength of bobo doll experiment
provides insight into domestic violence
2 weaknesses of bobo doll experiment
- acting violently towards a doll is different than violence in a real world setting (toward a person)
- ecological/external validity - bobo doll in an unfamiliar lab setting - children may have been behaving how they thought they were expected - demand characteristics
weakness of social learning theory (reductionist)
makes no reference to the importance of biological factors in behvaiour. In Bobo doll experiment, the boys were more aggressive than girls which may be a result of having more testosterone, but this is not accounted for in social learning theory
