Social Learning Theory Flashcards
Social learning theory
Behaviour could be acquired not only through direct experience but by observing one owns and others behaviour
Steps of social learning theory
1. Modelling
- someone who caries out attitude or behaviour to be learnt - models
- live model- a parent or teacher
- symbolic model- a celebrity
- Identification
- extent at which you relate to the role model e.g same sex, gender, relationship
Mediational processes
Attention - focusing on the modelled behaviour
retention- remembering the modelled behaviour
Motor reproduction-being able to carry out modelled behaviour
Motivation-wanting to carry out the modelled behaviour
- Imitation
Child learn acquired through imitation of attitudes and behaviour modelled by parents
- Vicarious reinforcement
- children who observed a model rewarded for aggressive behaviour more likely to imitate that behaviour than children who observed a model punished for same behaviour
- people don’t need to experience rewards or punishments in order to learn
Direct reinforcement
When you do something and your rewarded
Boob doll experiment
- Bandura et al
- Children observed aggressive + non-aggressive adult models and were tested for imitative learning in absence of model
Bobo doll experiment - results
1/2 children exposed to aggressive behaviour with the lifestyle bobo doll and other 1/2 non-aggressive
Negative Social learning theory
- bobo doll experiment
- guilt of demand characteristics - pps reacted with bias as performed how expected
- children hit doll as that’s how you play with it
- no social learning as behave as expected
Negative SLT
- don’t explain why boys more aggressive than girls
- biological approach explains better- boys have higher testosterone than girls
- only focuses on environment learning takes place
- not best in explaining behaviour
Positive SLT
- less deterministic than other approaches
- think about behaviour before carried out
- more free-will
- more appealing as more responsibility for actions
Positive SLT
- used to increase understanding of many areas of human behaviour
- someone engaging in criminal behaviour increases is exposed to model who commit criminal behaviour
- Ulrich supports- Strongest cause of behavioural is delinquent peer groups- violence modelled and rewarded
Positive SLT
- explains how children come to understand their gender role by imitating roles in media
- explains gander development
- understand sex roles
- produced a lot of research- benefits octet and understand behaviour
