Social Learning Theory Flashcards
Social learning theory
A way of explaining behaviour that includes both direct and indirect reinforcement, combining learning theory with the role of cognitive factors
Vicarious reinforcement
Reinforcement which isn’t directly experienced but occurs through observing someone else being reinforced for a behaviour. This is a key factor in imitation
Mediational processes
Cognitive factors that influence learning and come between stimulus and response
Modelling
From the observers perspective, modelling is imitating the behaviour of a role model. From the role models perspective, modelling is the precise demonstration of a specific behaviour that may be imitated by an observer
Identification
When an observer associates themselves with a role model and wants to be like the role model
Social learning theory evaluation points- Cognitive factors
STRENGTH
More comprehensive account of learning than proposed by the behaviourist approach
Social learning theory evaluation points- Contrived lab studies
LIMITATION
Demand characteristics as bobo doll is designed to be hit, so low validity
Social learning theory evaluation points- Real world application
STRENGTH
SLT can account for development of cultural differences E.g. in gender role
Social learning theory evaluation points- Reciprocal determinism
LIMITATION
Less determinist than behaviourism
