Social Learning Theory Flashcards
Introduction to Social Learning Theory
Bandura proposed it as a development of behaviourist approach
- focuses on human > animals behaviour
learning through OBSERVATION + IMITATION of ROLE MODELS
- can occur through CC/OC (directly) or observation (indirectly)
Imitation
- coping others to gauge how to behaviour
- as children, we imitate behaviour from parents
- Bandura was initially interested in children’s aggression
Role Models
- usually people of higher status
- same-sex, age + high-profile celebrities
- someone we can identify ourselves with
Identification
- someone that reflects something about you
- sex, clothing, age, mannerisms
Vicarious Reinforcement
learn consequences of behaviour from others
Positive Vicarious Reinforcement - tendency to repeat + duplicate behaviour to be rewarded like others
Negative Vicarious Reinforcement - less likely to be copied
Bobo Doll experiment
36 boys and 36 girls from the
Stanford University Nursery School aged
between 3 to 6 years old
Aggressive model shown to 24 children:
Non-aggressive model shown to 24
children
No model shown (control condition) - 24
children
Children who observed the aggressive
model acted more aggressively towards
the bobo doll then the group who
observed the non-aggressive model or
control groups.
- Boys imitated more physically
aggressive acts than girls. - Boys were more likely to imitate
same-sex models than girls. - not strict lab experiments
- controlled observation
-no extraneous variable
role of mediational processes
processes between stimulus + response
