Social Learning Theory Flashcards
what are 4 distinct mental processes of SLT?
Attention
retention
reproduction
motivation
What happens in attention?
where we notice the behaviour
What happens in retention?
where we remember behaviour.
What happens in reproduction?
where we are able to perform the behavour.
What happens in motivation?
where the pros outweigh the cons
Learning occurs through what in SLT?
Observation
Modelling
Imitation
Identification
What did Bandura call the process of learning through observing others?
vicarious reinforcement
What was the main aim of the bobo doll experiment?
it was to investigate whether aggression can be learned through social learning theory principles
What was the process involved in the bobo doll experiment?
exposing children to two different adult models an aggressive model and a non-aggressive model {36 female and 36 male}=72 children
What happened in the aggressive model group?
child plays in the room while an adult hit and shouted at a bobo doll.
What happened in the non-aggressive group?
child plays in a room while an adult plays quietly with a construction set.
What were the findings of the bobo doll experiment?
children who saw aggressive model produced more aggressive acts than others in either of the other groups.
Boys imitated same sex models than girls
Girls imitated more physical aggression if they saw male model and more verbal if they saw a female model
What was the conclution of the bobo doll experiments?
Aggressive behaviour can be lerned by children through observation and imitation of a model
What is the strength of the SLT?
It has plentiful research support which makes it have credibility
it is applicant to real life issues
What are the weaknesses of SLT?
one weakness is that the methodology used in research to support SLT has been criticised people would find out the aim of the research and change their bahavior thus lowering the validity of the study.
the SLT revolves around the issue of casuality and struggle to explain the complex behaviour like gender development
