social learning theory Flashcards
What is modelling?
A form of learning when an individual learns a particular behaviour by observing another individual performing that behaviour
A live model = parent, teacher/ member of a peer group
symbolic model= might be character portrayed in the media i.e character on a tv show
what is imitation?
The action of using someone or something as a model and copying their behaviour
what is identification?
A form of influence when an individual adopts an attitude or behaviour because they want to be associated with a particular group or person
Shutts et al in 2010 suggested that children are more likely identify with and learn with models who are similar to them i.e same-sex models
Identification with a model means that an individual is more likely to imitate their behaviour so SLT ie effective
What is vicarious reinforcement?
Learning that is not a result of direct reinforcement but through observing someone else being reinforced for that behaviour
Bandura and Waters noted that in 1963 children who observed a model for aggressive behaviour where more likely to imitate that behaviour than children who observed a model punished for the same behaviour
what is mediational processing?
refers to the internal mental processes that exist between environmental stimuli and the response made by an individual to those stimuli
Bandura in 1986 claimed that in order for social learning to take place the observer must form mental representations of the behaviour displayed by the model and the consequences of the behaviour
Describe the key studied conducted by Bandura et al in 1961
carried out a study of children who observed aggressive or non-aggressive adult models and were then tested for imitative learning in the absence of the model
they were exposed to adults acting aggressively towards a life sized Bobo doll and half exposed to non-aggressive models
i.e aggressive models would strike it with a mallet/verbal aggression saying ‘POW’
children were presented to another room with a bobo doll
describe the findings of the study
Children who viewed the aggressive model reproduced physical and verbal aggression to the doll as opposed to those who had the non-aggressive model and exhibited no aggressive behaviours towards the doll
1/3 of participants who were exposed to the non aggressive doll repeated the verbal responses
