Social Learning Theory Flashcards
what is social learning theory?
we learn through imitation (of role models) and reinforcement
what is modelling?
learning through the observation of other people (models), which may lead to imitation of the behaviour to be imitated leads to desirable consequences
what is identification?
taking on the behaviours, qualities and beliefs of another person (more complex than imitation)
according to bandura, what 2 reasons will we imitate a models behaviour?
if they are similar to us, or if we get positive reinforcement
what does ARRM stand for?
attention - must pay attention
retention - internalise
reproduction - practice
motivation - want to carry out the act
what is vicarious (indirect) reinforcement?
a child sees a role models behaviour being rewarded
what was the aim of the Bobo Doll (1961) study?
investigate whether aggression could be acquired through modelling
to see if children were more likely to imitate a same sex model
what experimental design was the bobo doll study?
matched pairs design
each child had been rated on a scale of 1-4 before the study was conducted
what was the difference in the video between the 2 groups?
one group watched the adult play in a non-aggressive manner with ‘tinker toys’ for 10 minutes
the other group watched the adult play calmly with ‘tinker toys’ for one minute, then aggressively attack the bobo doll for 9 minutes
what were the results of the bobo doll study?
children who saw the violent model imitated the exact behaviours they had seen
boys were more physically aggressive, girls were more verbally aggressive
boys were more likely to imitate the same sex model than girls
what was the conclusion of the bobo doll study?
observation can lead to children imitating violent and aggressive behaviour without reinforcement
