Social Learning Theory Flashcards
What are the assumptions of slt?
Bandura agreed with?
Slt proposed that?
Learning occurs through?
Bandura agreed with behaviourists that behaviour is learnt from experience.
However SLT proposed a different way people learn through observing and imitation.
Suggesting learning occurs through classical and operant conditioning but also indirectly.
What are the 4 mediational processes?
Attention
Retention
Motor Reproduction
Motivation
What is vicarious reinforcement?
Imitation only occurs if behaviour is rewarded
Procedure? (1st version) Albert Bandura
The original, from 1961, involved Bandura recording the behaviour of young children who either watched an adult attack the Bobo Doll with a hammer and shout abuse at it or watched an adult interact with the doll in a non-aggressive way.
Results? (1st version) Albert Bandura
Children who observed aggressive behaviour where also aggressive to the doll.
Children also found new ways of being aggressive to the doll e.g using other toys a as weapons.
Children who observed non-aggressive behaviour imitated non aggressive behaviour.
Procedure? (2nd version) Albert Bandura
A later version of the study had 3 groups of children all seeing an adult behave aggressively towards the Bobo Doll.
The first group saw the adults being praised for their behaviour.
The second group saw the adults being punished for their behaviour.
The third group – the control group – saw the adults experience no consequences for their behaviour.
The children were then given the opportunity to play with the Bobo Doll.
Results? (2nd version) Albert Bandura
On average the mean number of imitative responses where higher when the model was rewarded compared to when the model was punished.
If there was no consequences imitative behaviour still occurred.
On average boys had more imitative responses than girls.
Strengths of the SLT?
