social learning explanation Flashcards
what does SLT acknowledge?
the role of the social context and the importance of learning behaviours from others. places empahsis on environment (nurture) in shaping development
what is direct reinforcement?
children are more likely to be reinforced for gender appropriate behaviour
what is indirect reinforcement?
vicarious reinforcement occurs when children watch others get rewarded for a behaviour
identification and modelling?
this is a process by which a child will attach itself to a model they are like or want to be like
what are the cognitive processes that are central to gender behaviour?
attention - watching a footballer
retention - remembering the skill
motivation - the boy wants to be like his hero
mortor reproduction - physically capable of copying
supporting evidence (smith and lloyd)
involved 4-6 month old babies were dressed as either boys or girls
when assumed to be boys were given a hammer
when assumed to be girls they were given a cuddly toy
this suggests gender appropriate behaviour is stamped at an early age
supporting evidence ( western society)
as society has changed so has social norms - new forms of behaviour have now been reinforced
evaluation (not a developmental theory)
SLT cannot explain how learning processes change with age
comparison with biological
SLT places little emphasis on genes and chromosomes and only considers role of environment
comparison with psychodynamic
freud would accept the same sex parent importance however slt view of identification is different
