Q

What did Bandura argue?

A

He argued that operant and classical conditioning could not account for all human learning. He believed that there are important mental processes that lie between the stimulus and response proposed by the behaviourist approach.

Q

What did SLT propose?

A

Proposed that people learn through observation and imitation of others within a social context. They believed learning can occur directly (conditioning) but also indirectly.

Q

How can learning occur indirectly?

A

For indirect learning to take place imitation only occurs if the observed behaviour is rewarded (reinforced) rather than punished. This is called vicarious vicarious reinforcement.

Q

What are mediational processes?

A

Mediational processes are mental (cognitive) factors that intervene in the learning process to determine whether a new behaviour is acquired or not.

Occurs between observing the behaviour (stimulus) and imitating it or not (response).

Q

What are the 4 mediational processes?

A

Attention [first 2 refer to the learning of behaviour]
Retention
Motor Reproduction
Motivation [last 2 refer to the performance of behaviour]

Q

Who are people more likely to imitate?

A

The behaviour of people with whom they identify (identification), called a rolemodel. This process is called modelling.

Q

What did Bandura do?

A

Recorded the behaviour of young children who watched an adult behave in an aggressive way towards a Bobo doll. The adult hit the doll with a hammer and shouted abuse at it.

Q

Describe Bandura’s procedure

A

Showed videos to children where an adult behaved aggressively towards the Bobo doll.
One group of children saw the adult praised for their behaviour.
A second group saw the adult punished for their aggression towards the doll.
The third group (control group) saw the aggression without any consequence.

Q

What did Bandura find?

A

When given their own bobo doll to play with, the first group showed more aggression, followed by the third group and then the second.
