Q

Vygotsky

A

-Children need an MKO (More Knowledgeable Other) to fully acquire language as they push them past their ZPD (Zone of Proximal Development), which is their independent language ability

-This is done by means of CDS and Scaffolding (assistance to child’s language)

-Collaborative play in a variety of contexts is essential for language development

Q

Bruner

A

-Ritualistic Activities e.g. meal time, bed time, play time, help children acquire language as they learn words associated with these events and process these events to understand them

-Caregivers often teach through reading as they use labelling, questions, and give utterance feedback (may use recasting)

-Supported Vygotsky’s scaffolding idea

Q

Lenneberg and Genie

A

-Studied a ‘feral’ child Genie who had never had CDS as was abused by parents

-Theorised ‘Critical Period Hypothesis’ for acquiring language that ends at puberty

-Couldn’t develop language beyond the level of a 7-year-old, despite having CDS and learning after puberty, so innateness only allows language development to some extent
