Social Insitutuions and Education - Week 6 Flashcards
What is education ?
Education is the formal system in which society passes on its information and values from generation to generation.
What is manifest function ? What are latent ?
manifest- it is an obvious function of education
ex. learn to read, write, do math,
latent- functions that are not obvious
ex. learning to follow society’s rules and to respect authority, and being socialized to develop other qualities that will eventually make us efficient and obedient workers.
What is formal curriculum ? What is hidden curriculum ?
formal curriculum– we learn information that prepare us to be active in the workforce
hidden curriculum– refers to lessons taught in school that are unrelated to academic learning.
ex. lessons on citizenship, cooperation with others, values such as following orders, routines, competition, for example in sports
What is the Pygmalion effect?
the idea that teachers’ attitudes about their students unintentionally influence their academic performance
How does hidden curriculum relate to inequality in education?
hidden curriculum (the values and behaviors that students learn indirectly over the course of their schooling because of the educational system’s structure and teaching methods) and how this relates/influences inequity. This includes things such as obedience to authority and strict adherence to norms. Many argue that the hidden curriculum reinforces and reproduces conditions of social inequality in society.
What is Kozol’s ethnography, Savage Inequalities?
contends that because schools are funded by local property taxes, children in poor neighborhoods are trapped in poor schools, which reinforces inequality.
