Social Influence Process in Social Change Flashcards
Social Change
Occurs when society or a section of society adopts a new belief or way of behaving which then becomes widely accepted as the norm
Social norms interventions
Attempt to correct misperceptions of the normative behaviour of peers in an attempt to change the risky behaviour of a target population
Example - most of us don’t drink and drive
In Montana a poster was spread saying 4 out of 5 don’t drink and drive. Drink driving was decrease by 13.7%
Social change through minority influence is very gradual
There is a strong tendency for people to conform to the majority. For example suffragette movement. Influence of a minority is more latent than direct
Being perceived as deviant limits the minority
Majority may avoid aligning themselves with the minority because of this, making it more difficult for the minority to have influence
