Social Influence L1 Flashcards
Social influence definition
Social psychology looks at the relationships between people and how people affect each other’s behaviour
Conformity definition
A change in a person’s behaviour or opinions as a result of real or imagined pressure from a person or group of people
What are the three types of conformity?
- Compliance
- Internalisation
- Identification
Compliance definition
It is when people change their behaviour/views only in public in order to fit in with the majority, but their private views do not change (therefore it temporary)
E.g: A student on their first day pretending to find other students’ conversations interesting, even though they think they are actually dull
Internalisation definition
It is when people change their behaviour/views both in public & privately forever/permanently so that they are in line with the majority (it is a deeper & more permanent form of conformity as their beliefs change in private as well)
E.g: A student watching the other students closely during their first day at school and then eventually dressing & behaving like them because they agree with and value their dress sense & behaviour
Identification definition
It is when people change their behaviour/views both publicly and privately in order to conform to the opinions of a group as they feel they are similar to that group (only occurs when you are around that specific group).
E.g: Someone becomes a vegetarian because all their friends are and they do like vegetarian food. However, when they are no longer with the group they may choose to eat meat
