Conformity
A form of social influence where group pressure, real or imagined, results in a change in behaviour
Compliance
Publicly, but not privately, going along with majority influence in order to gain group acceptance
Identification
Public and private acceptance of majority influence in order to gain acceptance
Internalisation
Public and private acceptance of majority influence, through adoption by of the majority groups belief system
Normative social influence (NSI)
A motivational force to be liked and accepted by a group. Not ridiculed.
Informational social influence (ISI)
A motivational force to look for others for guidance in order to be correct because they may have more information than you
Obedience
Complying with the demands of an authority figure
Agentic state
Acting as an agent for someone else because of a feeling of less personal responsibility
De-individuation
A state in which individuals have lower self awareness and a weaker sense of personal responsibility for their actions
Dehumanisation
Degrading people by lessening of their human qualities
Social cryptomnesia
The knowledge that changed has occurred but not yet recalled how things changed
Locus of control
The way an individual believes life is controlled (external or internal factors)
Minority influence
A type of social influence that motivates individuals to reject established majority norms
