Biological Approach Flashcards
What are the four assumptions of the biological approach?
Genes can affect behaviour
Body chemistry is influential
What is learned from animals can be applied to humans - same ancestry
The CNS performs and important role
What was the warrior gene study and was was concluded?
Study to figure why the Māori are aggressive and a gene (MAOA-L) was discovered in those with a higher level of aggression but not all with the gene displayed violent criminal behaviour
What is a phenotype and genotype?
Phenotypes are the observable characteristic
Genotypes are the genetic material
What was bock and Goode’s study?
Nice were raised alone and had never seen another mouse but when put in a group should aggression towards others
What was McNamee’s study?
Nice with low levels of neurotransmitter serotonin were more reactive to stress than those with normal levels of serotonin
What are the benefits of researching on animals?
Share a common ancestor so learning can be relevant
More ethical than researching on humans
Quicker to check effects on animals as they grow up faster
What are the drawbacks of researching on animals?
Unethical to research on animals
Can’t directly link to humans all the time
What was Bailey and Pillard’s study?
And what can be concluded?
He tested for homosexuality in monozygotic and dizygotic twins.
80% concordance in identical twins and only 22% in non identical twins
Genetic influence on sexuality but there are other factors affecting someone’s sexuality
What was malaty and Graham’s study?
Tested for the concordance of a disease (peptic ulcer) in monozygotic and dizygotic twins.
Concordance of 67% in monozygotic and 22% in dizygotic
What is introspection
Personally noting your thoughts when doing something or presented with a stimulus
