What is identification
Publicly publicly we agree with the group when in private we don’t actually agree with everything the group stands for
What is compliance
When you go along with others in public but privately you don’t change your opinion at all
What is informational social influence
When we conform to agree with the opinion of the majority because we think it is correct
What is normative social influence
We agree with the opinion of the majority because we want to be accepted and be liked
What is internalisation?
When you believe the same thing in Private and in public
What research support is there for informational social influence
Lucas et al (2006) found people are more likely to conform when the task is more difficult this shows people conform in situations where they feel they don’t know the answer
Individual differences in normative social influence
McGhee and Teevan (1967) found nAffiliators (people who have a great need for affiliation) are more likely to conform and others the shows are individual differences in the way people conform
Informational social influence and normative social influence work together
Deutsch and Gerrards two process approach believes that normative social influence and informational social influence work together
Research support for normative social influence
Asch (1951) found conformity rates fell to 12.5% when participants were asked to write down the answers instead of saying them out loud
What is conformity?
A change in a persons behaviours or opinions as a result of real or imagined pressure from a person or group of people
