What was Asch’s study?
Looking at bars and saying which is the longest bar.
What is social influence?
The change in behavior that one person causes in another, intentionally or unintentionally.
What is conformity?
Yielding to group pressure.
What is majority influence?
Where the bulk of a group tries to influence others in the group to conform to their beliefs.
Why do people conform?
To fit in
Don’t want to be bullied
Wanted to be right
What are the types of conformity?
Normative conformity
Informational conformity
What is normative conformity?
Where people yield to group pressure because they want to fit in and are concerned about being rejected by others in the group
What is informational conformity?
Where people yield to group pressure because they want to be perceived as correct and so follow the lead of others.
What is compliance?
Where you conform to the group behavior to gain their approval but will privately disagree.
What is internalization?
Occurs in situation where the majority opinion has led you to change your opinion and accept the majority position and behavior as you genuinely believe it.
What is collective behavior?
The behavior of two or more individuals who are acting together or collectively - prosocial
What is crowd behaviour?
A group of people who have come together for a common purpose - deindividuation lose responsibility.
What is anti social behaviour?
Behaviour that causes harassment, alarm or distress to other people.
What is pro social behaviour?
Social behaviour that helps or benefits other people or society as a whole.
What did le bon say?
When an individual is put in a crowd situation they will become anonymous and part of the faceless crowd that then take on the collective mind of the crowd. Deindividuation causes more anti social behaviour.
What is obedience?
Following orders from a perceived authority figure.
What is a situational factor?
Features of the situation which are external factors that can influence how we behave.
What is an agentic state?
A feeling of irresponsibility of one’s actions as they are acting under orders from an authority figure.
What is an authority figure?
Someone we perceive as having more power than us.
How does Asch’s study show normative conformity?
Participants may have given incorrect answers because they wanted to fit in with the group and avoid standing out.
How does Asch’s study show informational influence?
Some participants may have doubted their own perceptions and thought that the majority’s answer was correct, yielding to the group.
How did Le Bob explain crowd behaviour?
Behaviour is unconscious and driven by instinct leading to violence and people acting in ways they would never contemplate if they’re in their own.
What is an in-group?
Someone who is part of your group.
What is an out - group?
Someone who is not in your group.
