Memory Flashcards
What are the stages of the information processing model?
Input encoding storage retrieval output
What does the information processing model compare the mind to?
A computer
What is input?
Put into the brain through there body’s senses
What is encoding?
Information is transformed into a format we can understand.
What is storage?
Where information is kept within the brain.
What is retrieval?
Recalling information from where it is stored in the memory.
What is output?
Using the information you have retrieved to carry out a behaviour?
What can pseudonym can be used to remember the order of the information processing model?
Intelligent
Elephants
Are
Suspicious of
Rascal
Otters
What is amnesia?
A condition which can significantly affect a person’s ability to recall stored memories or form new ones.
What are the types of amnesia?
Retrograde
Anterograde
What is retrograde amnesia?
The inability to recall memories from the past after damage.
What is anterograde amnesia?
The inability to form new memories.
What are the types of forgetting?
Decay
Retrieval failure
Displacement
What is decay?
If you don’t pay attention to information or rehearse it then it can decay and you will forget it.
What is retrieval failure ?
The inability to recall something because the cue needed to trigger the memory is not present.
What is displacement?
Information that is in short term memory can be pushed out by new information once the store becomes full.
What part of the brain is responsible for anterograde amnesia?
Hippocampus
What part of the brain is responsible for retrograde amnesia?
Frontal lobe
What part of the brain is responsible for procedural memory and movement?
Cerebellum
What are autobiographical memories?
Memories of the things we have done and places we have been.
What are semantic memories?
Memories of facts, names and general knowledge.
What are episodic memories?
Memories of places, events and people
What are procedural memories?
Memory for motor skills.
What is the multi store model of memory?
Environment input
Sensory memory
Through attention to …
Short term memory
Through rehearsal to …
Long term memory
How long does the sensory store hold information for?
0.5 seconds
How is information lost from the sensory store ?
Decay
What is the capacity and length of time something can be held for in the short term memory?
7 plus or minus two
30 seconds
How can information be lost in the short term memory?
Decay
Displacement
