a person changes their behaviour publicly but not privately. they dont agree with the majority but they go along with it temporarily to fit in
define identification
a person changes to fit in with the majority both privately and publicly but only whilst a member of that specific group
define internalisation
a person changes both publicly and privately permanently. they develop the values, attitudes and behaviours of a group.

conforming to be liked and accepted by the group, to avoid social regection.

what was the aim of aschs study

what was the procedure of aschs study
123 male students took part inwhat they thought was a vision perception test. they were asked to say out loud which of three comparison lines matched a standard line in length. they heard 6 confederates give a unaminous incorrect answer before they answered . each student did 6 practice trials and 12 critical trials.
what were the findings of aschs study
38.6% conformity across all trials. 25% didnt conform at all, 75% conformed on atleast one trial. 50% conformed in atleast 6 trials and 5% conformed in all trials.

the particpants said they privately trusted their own opinions but publicly agreed with the group which provides evidence for normative social influence compliance)
