Outline what compliance is.
When individuals conform publicly to the views or behaviours of others in the group, but disagree privately. This tends to be temporary.
Outline what internalisation is.
Deepest level of conformity. When a person hears the views of a group and take these views on themselves both publicly and privately.
Outline what identification is.
When an individual accepts influence because they want to be associated with a certain group. They change their views publicly and privately to fit in. I.e taking up smoking due to being influenced by a group of smokers.
What are the 3 types of conformity?
Compliance.
Internalisation.
Identification.
Outline what normative social influence (NSI) is (explanation for conformity)
The desire to be liked. - We conform because we think others will approve and accept us.
Outline what information social influence (ISI) is (explanation for conformity)
The desire to be right.
Outline what the agentic state is.
When people do not feel responsible for their own actions, they transfer the blame to the person giving the order.
Outline what legitimacy of authority is.
(An explanation for obedience) A person who is perceived to be in a position of social control within a situation. This requires an institution such as a scientific lab.
Outline what autonomous state is.
Individuals are seen as personally responsible for their own actions.
Outline what is meant by authoritarian personality. (Dispositional explanation for obedience).
refers to someone who has extreme respect/obedience for authority. (The F - scale measures this)
Outline Adornos Study. (F - scale) (Evaluation of dispositional factors)
Adorno aimed to find out what different components made up authoritarian personality and came up with the F scale. It contained questions such as “rules are there for people to follow, not change.”
Agreeing with these statements was indicative of authoritarian personality.
Adorno found people who scored highly on the F scale tend to have been raised by parents with an authoritarian parenting style i.e physical punishment.
What are the 3 personality types which make up a person who is right wing authoritarianism?
Conventionalism - Following conventional norms and values.
Authoritarian aggression - aggressive feelings to those who violate those norms.
Authoritarian submission - Accepting those with legitimacy of authority without question.
Outline Erms and Millgrams study on dispositional factors.
Carried out a study on 20 ps that gave maximum shock and 20 that didn’t and noticed significant differences between obedient and defiant.
Outline what an internal locus of control is. (Resistance to social influence)
The belief we control events in our life. People with this LOC believe this is due to consequence of their own ability and effort and are more likely to display independence in thought and rely less on the opinions of other and are more likely to resist social influence.
Outline external locus of control (resistance to social influence)
People who believe what happens is down to external factors such as the influence of other or luck. More like to accept influence of others and have a passive attitude.
