Oral - sucking behaviour (0-18 months)
Anal - holding or discarding faeces (18 months - 3.5 years)
Phallic - fixation on genitals (3-6 years)
Latency - repressed sexual urges (6 years to puberty)
Genital - awakened sexual urges (puberty to adolescence)

Unconscious activity determines how we behave.
Childhood experiences shape our adult personality.
ID and superego are in constant conflict.
What are conscious thoughts?
Thoughts you are aware of.
What are precocious thoughts?
Just below the surface of awareness and can be retrieved relatively easily.
What are unconscious thoughts?
Thoughts buried deep below conscious awareness. They still influence our behaviour.
What are the role of defence mechanisms?
Sooth the mind from anxiety.
Outline repression.
Forcing a distressing memory out of the conscious memory.
Outline denial.
Refusing to acknowledge some aspect of reality.
Outline displacement.
Transferring feelings onto a substitute target i.e slamming a door transferring anger.
What does it mean by psychosexual stages?
Personality developing through a series of childhood stages.
How does the psychodynamic approach treat behaviour?
Psychotherapy. Bringing unconscious conflict into the conscious mind so it can be addressed. This is a practical application.
