SOCIAL INFLUENCE Flashcards
What is conformity?
Conformity is changing your opinion’s or behaviour based on real or imaginary pressure from your peers.
What types of conformity are there?
Compliance
Internalisation
Identification
What is compliance?
Compliance is a shallow conformity where a person changes their public behaviour but not their private beliefs
What is internalisation?
Internalisation is a deep form of conformity where a person permanently changes their public and private behaviour and beliefs.
What is identification?
Identification is a moderate level of conformity where you conform to the behaviours and opinions of your group because there is something that we value in that group. You identify with the group and want to be recognised as being a part of it so the beliefs are internalised in order to gain approval. Beliefs are adopted and seen as correct (internalised), however the purpose of this is to be accepted and fit in (compliance.) The individual may not privately believe in everything the group stands for.
What are the reasons for conformity?
Normative social influence and informational social influence.
What is normative social influence?
Normative social influence is complying in order to fit in or to be accepted. NSI is about avoiding rejection. NSI leads to compliance or identification because its about wanting to fit in. This happens around strangers and close friends.
